1. Open letter to Gina Kravitz, who runs my local Susan G Komen chapter here in South Bay, Florida

    Dear Ms. Kravitz:

Susan G Komen has long been one of the largest clearinghouses for donations to fund the fight against breast cancer.  Now, the organization is putting right-wing politics ahead of women’s health, and in particular, the health of the millions of low-income women served by Planned Parenthood.

It’s wrong. And many of Komen’s state and local affiliates are distancing themselves from the national organization’s decision, and vowing to keep funding Planned Parenthood’s cancer screenings.

I hope that you will distance Komen Suncoast from the National organization and continue to fund Planned Parenthood’s very important and needed breast cancer screenings here in Florida.  In this economy, there are so many people that cannot afford an alternative.

If you decide to support the National initiative, and stop funding local Planned Parenthood, I will NO LONGER SUPPORT the Susan G Komen foundation and will instead support organizations like Army of Women, Breast Cancer Action, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Planned Parenthood directly.

Please note that I am posting this letter on my Facebook page and my Tumblr blog, as well as sending a copy to all my friends and neighbors here in Florida.

    Sincerely,

  2. Farmers need your voice today. Please spread the word.

On January 31, family farmers will take part in the first phase of a court case filed to protect farmers from genetic trespass by Monsanto’s GMO seed, which contaminates organic and non-GMO farmer’s crops and opens them up to abusive lawsuits. In the past two decades, Monsanto’s seed monopoly has grown so powerful that they control the genetics of nearly 90% of five major commodity crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and sugar beets.

In many cases farmers are forced to stop growing certain organic and conventional crops to avoid genetic contamination and potential lawsuits. Between 1997 and 2010, Monsanto admits to filing 144 lawsuits against America’s family farmers, while settling another 700 out of court for undisclosed amounts. Due to these aggressive lawsuits, Monsanto has created an atmosphere of fear in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy.
